A Week of Highs and Lows and a Chance to Remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

By, Menlo Oak Staff

This was a week when our sports heroes let us down. Cyclist Lance Armstrong and Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o both acknowledged they tried to deceive the public.

While there were lows in the national sports scene, there was intense joy about sports in the Bay Area. The San Francisco 49ers will be going to the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years. And the best surfers in the world converged on a beach near Half Moon Bay to ride big, really big, waves.

Halfway around the world, hostages held by terrorists were among those killed as Algeria tried to rescue the captives.

Finally, on the day the nation celebrated the birth of one of the world’s greatest civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the first African-American elected President of the United States was inaugurated for his second term.
